Double Bass, E Bass and other stuff Born Glasgow, Scotland 18/1/40. † Edinburgh, Scotland 2001. Moved to London 1965, Zürich 1978, Edinburgh since 1990. 1965/66, 1967 and 1970, worked as ships musician on the «Queen Mary» and P&O liners to the far east and Australia. Studied with Peter Ind 1972/73. Since turning Professional in 1963 has recorded with John Stevens, Trevor Watts, Evan Parker, Keith Tippett, Christoph Gallio, Dieter Ulrich, Urs Blöchlinger, Mike Oldfield and many traditional jazz, rock and folk groups. Has toured, broadcast and gigged with the above and also with Stan Tracy, Derek Bailey, Kenny Wheeler, Ken Colyer, Paul Rutherford, Nat Su, Lockjaw Davis, Bobby Bradford, Maggie Nichols, Lol Coxhill, Yuseef Lateef, D.J.s, tapes and underground pop bands. Main influences: Monk, King Oliver, Ornette, Schönberg, Derek Bailey and Monk again. Refuses to recognise musical boundaries or stylistic obsolescense. |
